Graphic design is an interesting thing. I often find that an occasional fifteen minutes of screwing around in Paint helps induce a pleasantly halcyon state--basically low-rez satori, on the cheap and without any major side effects.  So, here are a few .gifs to waste some time looking at.  If you like them, swell.  If not, try not to complain too much; it's not like I charge or anything.

Further, there is something pleasantly quaint about the proposition that cheerfully colored pieces of cloth can be used to express ideas--and rather complex ones, at that. I suppose that this makes vexillology an ideogrammatic language, the most colorful in the world, and one gracefully removed from the grubby earthbound reality of nouns, adverbs, prepositions, and the other lexical clutter we all have to deal with on an everyday basis.

That alone is a reason to pay attention.

The particular impetus for this site happens to be the fact that I have long been fascinated by the use of graphics and symbols as an instrument for the manufacture of synthetic realities.  Fiction, of a moderately speculative bent, in other words. If you like what you see on these pages I heartily recommend a glance at the fictional-flags pages at FOTW ( which contain volumes more on this topic.

Penultimately, a mission statement: these pages will feature flags and coats of arms from various works of fiction that have caught my notice.  And that I like.  Hopefully ones that have yet to be terminally overexposed.  Nice designs are worth extra points. If you see anything you like, feel free to share it, though an attribution would be nice. Also, some of these images are probably under some copyright or other, so caveat lector--don't blame me if some corporation wakes up in a litigious mood one day.

And finally, let me know what you think.  Email below.
